OHIO
Ms. Denmark began her career in Cincinnati, Ohio in April 1997 in Hamilton County Municipal Court. In fact, she was so excited to begin her career that she showed up for work a full week early. It was a sign of good things to come.
Ms. Denmark was assigned to Judge Guy C. Guckenberger. It's no secret he was a tough, demanding judge with a heavy case load. But he proved to also be fair, thorough and tech savy. In December 1999 Judge Guckenberger posed this question: "Angela, what do you think about realtime?"
Ms. Denmark's response? "Judge, realtime is happening! Realtime is now!" That answer got her noticed. The judge then asked her what it took "to get up and running". Unbeknownst to Judge Guckenberger, Ms. Denmark had already used her rent money the previous month to purchase her first realtime software program, ProCat Winner 2000. Ninety days was a comfortable window for her. In that 90 day period of time Ms. Denmark did a cost analysis, performed product compatability research, data mining and then presented the judge with her final analysis.
The rest, as they say, is history. In March 2000, Ms. Denmark became the first offical court reporter in the history of Hamilton County Municipal Court, Cincinnati, Ohio to provide daily realtime to the bench.
KENTUCKY
Ms. Denmark continued to blaze a trial of firsts in her court reporting career.
She accepted a position with the United States District Court for the Eastern District of Kentucky in London, Kentucky in January 2003. She was the first African-American federal official court reporter in that capacity. Her duty stations included London, Kentucky and Pikeville, Kentucky.
Her resposibilities included providing almost daily realtime to the bench for jury trials, motions, hearings, sentencings. The cases she encountered varied form Illegal Gun Possession to Assault with Intent to Murder. Ms. Denmark also covered Magistrate court and took grand jury returns.
NEBRASKA
In May 2005 Ms. Denmark's accepted a position with the 4th Judicial District of Nebraska, Douglas County District Court in Omaha, Nebraska. Ms. Denmark was the first African-American official court reporter ever hired there. Judge Marlon A. Polk made history at the same time by becoming the first African-American District Court Judge in Omaha, Nebraska.
Again, Ms. Denmark's responsibilities included providing almost daily realtime to the bench for jury trials, hearings and sentencings. Ms. Denmark's experience was expanded to include divorce, adult drug court, domestic relations, paternity and medical malpractice trials.
Ms. Denmark also served as an alternate official court reporter for the Honorable Vernon Daniels, Separate Juvenile Court Judge. Judge Daniels was so impressed with Ms. Denmark's skills as a court reporter that he offered her the position of official court reporter for his courtroom! Since she was already working as an official court reporter in distict court at the time, Ms. Denmark was extremely flattered, but respectfully declined.
BACK TO OHIO
In January 2007, Ms. Denmark returned to her home state of Ohio to be closer to her 83 year old mother, Alice Mansfield-Denmark, and open her own agency. By February 2007 Ms. Denmark signed the lease and officially opened DCR Denmark Court Reporting Agency, LLC.
DCR is the first African-American owned and founded court reporting agency in the City of Hamilton and the second in the City of Cincinnati. As a matter of fact, DCR is the ONLY court reporting agency operating in Hamilton! Ohio today.
Now DCR was founded on the premise that although court reporters are "guardians of the record", they're much more; court reporters can be CART providers, captioners, and realtime writers.
In our capacity as CART providers, we serve as the crucial link to communication access in the courtrooms, classrooms and beyond.
In our capacity as captioners we bring breaking news, weather, television shows, movies, etc. to over 30 million deaf and hard of hearing citizens.
In our capacity as traditional court reporters or realtime writers, we can provide instant tranlation of the spoken word into readable text for judges and attorneys.
